The IPv6 Challenge

IPv6 is coming—it's the inevitable change in addressing the Internet must make to create address space when IPv4 space is depleted. But the vast majority of Internet content is accessed via IPv4. Many hosts, and most applications in customer residential networks, including older PCs, game consoles, consumer electronic devices, and HDTVs, can only use IPv4 addresses.

So, while the move to IPv6 is necessary to accommodate the continuing explosion of Internet space requirements, current Internet technology profile mandates that access via IPv4 and access via IPv6 have to coexist now, and for the foreseeable future. How can you do that?

Juniper Answers the IPv6 Challenge

Juniper Networks has made significant investments in technologies and solutions that enable enterprises and service providers to meet mixed IP addressing needs even as they build outIPv6 networks as rapidly as markets and services require.

There will be a long period of transition in which networks need to support both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing. Juniper technologies provide a range of addressing techniques for traffic that has to flow between IPv4 and emerging IPv6 infrastructures. Coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 cannot be addressed with a one-size-fits-all approach, but a toolkit of options based on the particular needs and configurations of current networks can provide the right solution.

Our Next Generation Network Addressing portfolio of IPv4 address conservation, IPv4-IPv6 address co-existence and IPv6 transition technologies include IPv6, v4/v6 dual stack, NAT44, NAPT44, NAT-PT, NAT64, 6to4-PMT, 6rd, and DS-Lite. These technologies help network operators improve subscriber and service scale, mitigate IPv4 address depletion and pragmatically transition to IPv6 based on business requirements.

During the 24hour period on World IPv6 Day we successfully delivered over 65,000 unique www.juniper.com page-views to IPv6 addresses and handled 13.5million packets through the NAT64 Translator. We are committed to helping our customers make educated, practical design decisions about the technologies employed in your networks to meet this challenge. You can learn more in a new Juniper white paper called Tools and Strategies for Coping With IPv4 Address Depletion. Providing the reader with a clear understanding of these technologies and how they can be used for different scenarios.
