General Functions

Operational commands can be grouped by the task you want to perform:

• Entering configuration mode:

• configure—Enter configuration mode. See the JUNOS System Basics Configuration Guide.

• Maintaining files:

• file—Compare, copy, delete, list, and display the contents of files.

• Getting help:

• help—Get help on how to use the CLI and get information on commands. See About the Command-Line Interface.

• Monitoring and troubleshooting:

• clear—Clear database information, sessions, and more.
• monitor—Perform real-time debugging of various software components, including routing protocols, interfaces, and more.
• ping—Determine the reachability of a remote host, node, or path.
• show—Display information about the system, including the current configuration, interface status, routing protocols, and more.
• test—Test the configuration syntax, interface connectivity, application of policy filters and autonomous system (AS) path regular expressions, and more.
• traceroute—Trace the route to a remote network host.

• Exiting the CLI:

• quit—Exit the CLI
• start—Exit the CLI and start a UNIX shell.

• Restarting software processes:

• restart—Restart software processes, including routing, interface control, and more.

• Performing system-level operations:

• request—Perform system-level operations, including stopping and rebooting the router, loading JUNOS software images, and more.

• Setting environment parameters:

• set chassis—Set the craft interface display on the front of the router.
• set cli—Set CLI properties. See the JUNOS System Basics Configuration Guide.
• set date—Set the router's date and time. See the JUNOS System Basics Configuration Guide.

• Connecting to systems:

• ssh—Open secure shell connections.
• telnet—Open telnet sessions to other hosts on the network.
