J-series Features

J-series Services Routers have the following features. For more information, see the J-series Services Router User Guide. For more information about the JUNOS Internet software that runs on Services Routers, see the manuals listed in Table 4.

Software and Software Upgrades

• Software bundle—The J-series Services Routers use the software bundle junos-jseries for software upgrades. If you are a current JUNOS user, you cannot install the jinstall or jbundle software bundles on the J-series routers. Similarly, you cannot install the junos-jseries bundle on M-series or T-series routing platforms.

Services Router Hardware

• J-series Services Routers—These routing systems, which run JUNOS software, are designed for medium and large enterprises and the edges of service provider networks. Services Routers are available in three models that support a variety of DS3 (T3), E1, Fast Ethernet, serial, and T1 interface combinations:
  • J2300—Two Fast Ethernet ports and an additional two T1, E1, or serial ports
  • J4300—Two Fast Ethernet ports (fixed) and up to six Physical Interface Modules (PIMs), each with two T1, E1, serial, or Fast Ethernet ports each
  • J6300—Two Fast Ethernet ports (fixed) and up to six PIMs, each with two T1, E1, serial, or Fast Ethernet ports or one DS3 port each
• Rescue configuration button—If the current configuration fails, you can load a rescue configuration or the factory default configuration by pressing the CONFIG button, located to the right of the power button on the front of the Services Router chassis. Because the button is recessed, you must use a thin tool to push it. Press and release the button quickly, or hold it down for more than 15 seconds, to specify which configuration to load:
  • Rescue configuration—When you press and quickly release the CONFIG button, the configuration LED blinks green and the rescue configuration is loaded and committed. The rescue configuration is user defined and must be set previously for this operation to be successful.
  • Factory defaults—When you hold the CONFIG button for more than 15 seconds, the configuration LED blinks red and the current committed and all previous revisions of the router's configuration are deleted. This action sets the router back to the factory default configuration.

  After the configuration is committed, the configuration LED shines steadily green. If the operation fails, the configuration LED shines steadily red.

Services Router User Interface and Configuration

• Autoinstallation— You can download a configuration file automatically from an File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), or Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server. When you power on a Services Router configured for autoinstallation, it requests an IP address from a Dynamic Host Confirmation Protocol (DHCP) server. Once the Services Router has an address, it sends a request to a configuration server and downloads and installs a configuration.
• J-Web user interface—A graphical user interface enables you to configure and monitor the J-series Services Routers through an Internet browser. The J-Web interface includes Quick Configuration pages to perform basic configuration of the router; monitoring tools to view system health, routes, and statistics; diagnostic tools (such as ping and traceroute); and file utilities to manage configuration files, licenses, and temporary files on the router.
• The JUNOS software on J-series Services Routers is fully featured and requires no additional software packages. To access select features and additional ports, you purchase and install license keys with either the J-Web interface or command-line interface (CLI). Licenses are available for the following software features and ports:
  • IP Security (IPSec) tunneling
  • Stateful firewall filters
  • Advanced Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) support
  • J-Flow traffic analysis
  • T1 interfaces (additional 1, 2, or 4 ports)
  • E1 interfaces (additional 1, 2, or 4 ports)
  • Serial interfaces (additional 1, 2, or 4 ports)
  • Fast Ethernet interfaces (additional 1, 2, or 4 ports)

Services Router Interfaces and Chassis

• J4300 and J6300 Services Routers are designed to handle simultaneously up to six enabled fast ports in addition to their two fixed LAN ports. A fast port is defined as a Fast Ethernet port on a J4300 Services Router, and either a Fast Ethernet port or DS3 (T3) port on a J6300 Services Router.

  This limitation is on the number of enabled ports, not on installed ports. A two-port Fast Ethernet PIM with one enabled port counts as one fast port. The same PIM with both ports enabled counts as two fast ports.

• J-series Services Routers support the following multilink services:
  • Compressed Real-Time Protocol (CRTP)
  • Multilink Frame Relay (MFR)
  • Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MLPPP)
• USB interface support—Using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) compact flash storage device, you can boot JUNOS images, and save and load system files (such as configuration files, licenses, system snapshots, and core files). To copy system files and create a bootable USB compact flash storage device, issue the request system snapshot device usb partition command.

  The following USB drives are supported for use with J-series Services Routers:

  • SanDisk—Cruzer Mini 2.0 256 MB, Model SDCZ2-256-A10, Part# 54–99–00424–256
  • SanDisk—Cruzer Mini 2.0 512 MB, Model SDCZ2-512-A10, Part# 54–99–00424–512
  • SanDisk—ImageMate USB 2.0 Reader/Writer for CompactFlash Type I and II, Model SDDR-91-A15, Part# 20-90-00115
  • SanDisk CompactFlash—128 MB, Part# SDCFB-256-A10
  • SanDisk CompactFlash—256 MB, Part# SDCFB-256-A10
  • SanDisk CompactFlash—512 MB, Part# SDCFB-512-455
  • SanDisk CompactFlash—1 GB, Part# SDCFB-1000-A10

  When an unsupported USB device is inserted into the USB port, the Services Router generates an error message. Any subsequent attempt to access the USB device fails.

Class of Service

• J-series class of service (COS)—Provides the following features for J-series Services Routers:
  • Shaping—Enables you to limit the amount of bandwidth allocated to a queue or an interface.
  • Adaptive shaping—Enables bandwidth limits on Frame Relay interfaces when the Services Router receives frames containing the backward explicit congestion notification (BECN) bit.
  • Virtual channels and virtual channel groups—Enables you to direct traffic into a virtual channel and apply bandwidth limits to the channel.

Network Management

• Chassis Management Information Base (MIB) definitions have been updated to support J-series Services Routers. You can find the enterprise-specific Juniper Networks MIBs at http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/software/index_mibs.html.

JUNOScript and Other Application Programming Interfaces

• Table 1 lists the new JUNOScript tags for the J-series Services Routers and their corresponding CLI commands.
