Connecting the Fiber-Optic Array Cables to the TX Matrix Plus Router

  1. Labeling the Fiber-Optic Array Cables
  2. Connecting the Fiber-Optic Array Cables to the TX Matrix Plus Router

Labeling the Fiber-Optic Array Cables

Each cable has two labels that contain information about the connections between the switch-fabric chassis (SFC) and the line-card chassis (LCC). For the SFC, each label indicates the SFC chassis ID number (always 0 for the A4 configuration), TXP-SIB slot number, even (0) or odd (1) side of the TXP-F13, and the port on the TXP-F13. For the LCC, each label indicates the LCC chassis ID number, TXP-T1600 SIB slot, and the port. For example, use the labels marked SFC: 0-0-0-A > 0-0-A port A on the even side of the TXP-F13 SIB in slot 0 and LCC: 0-0-A -> 0-0-0-A port A on the LCC-SIB in slot 0 in the T1600 router LCC0 to identify a connection between the TX Matrix Plus router (SFC) and T1600 router (LCC).

  1. Locate the supplied blank label sheets in the accessory box.
  2. See Table 1 to identify which TXP-F13 SIB slots are supported for your hardware configuration and locate the labels for those slots.
  3. Print the labels on the blank label sheets. See the TX Matrix Plus Fiber-Optic Array Cable Label Guide.
  4. Attach a label to each end of the fiber-optic array cable to help you identify the corresponding TXP-F13 SIB and TXP-T1600 SIB.

Connecting the Fiber-Optic Array Cables to the TX Matrix Plus Router

Each TXP-F13 SIB has 8 ports: 4 ports labeled EVEN and four ports labeled ODD.

The following procedure assumes that you have labeled both ends of each fiber-optic array cable that you plan to use and tested the TXP-F13 SIB fiber-optic array ports. After you connect a cable, route it into the cable management system before you connect another cable.

Note: Do not connect the fiber-optic array cables to the T1600 routers at this time.

To connect the fiber-optic array cables to the fiber-optic array ports on a TXP-F13 SIB:

  1. Disable the TXP-F13 SIB by pressing the ONLINE/OFFLINE button.
  2. Using the labels on the fiber-optic array cables, locate the four fiber-optic array cables that will be connected to the TXP-F13 SIB.
  3. Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points on the chassis.
  4. Ensure that the TXP-F13 SIB fiber-optic array port corresponds to the label you attached to the end of the cable.
  5. Remove the dust cover from the fiber-optic array port. Store the dust cover in a dust-free resealable plastic bag.

Caution: If you do not use dust covers, small deposits of oil, dust, and debris can enter the fiber-optic array ports and fiber-optic array cable connectors. If a dust cover is missing from a fiber-optic array port or cable, clean it before you connect the cable.

  6. Remove the dust cover from the fiber-optic array cable. Store the dust cover in a dust-free resealable plastic bag.
  7. Align the cable connector with the corresponding TXP-F13 SIB port, and carefully press cable connector into the port until it stops. The cable connector and adapter are keyed to ensure proper mating. On the even side, connect and route the cable labeled D, before you connect the cable labeled C, and so on. On the odd side, connect and route the cable labeled A, before you connect the cable labeled B, and so on.
  8. Pull the latch for the cable management clamp (Figure 3) toward you to release it.
  9. Place the fiber-optic array cable upward into the labeled slot A, B, C, or D for that cable. Route the cable upward toward the comb assembly on top of the chassis Figure 4), and press it into the divider.

Caution: You must maintain a minimum bend radius of 4 in. (10.2 cm) short term, and 3 in. (7.6 cm) long term.

  10. Arrange the fiber-optic array cables so that they do not interfere with system airflow and maintenance access.

For an illustration of air flow through the TX Matrix Plus router, see Airflow Through the Chassis.

  11. Repeat the procedure for the remaining fiber-optic array cables that connect to the TXP-F13 SIB.
  12. Enable the TXP-F13 SIB by pressing the ONLINE/OFFLINE button.
  13. Route the other end of the fiber-optic array cables to the T1600 router, but do not connect the cables to the T1600 router until instructed to do so.

Caution: Plastic wrap-ties can damage or crimp the fiber-optic array cables (see Figure 5). We recommend that you use soft band straps to secure fiber-optic array cables.
