Connecting the JCS1200 Management Module to the Network
The management module supports
network connection through an Ethernet connector or a serial connector
(see Figure 1).
Figure 1: Ports on the JCS1200 Management
Module
All management
module network connections to Routing Engines are
made through the CLI. You can perform initial configuration of the
management module after you connect it to your network; however, because
some requirements are imposed by the default management module settings,
it might be easier to perform these setup operations through a direct
connection.
For direct connection of a computer to the management module
Ethernet connector, you need a Category 5 or higher Ethernet cable.
Network connections through the serial connector may require
an Advanced Management Module (AMM) adapter.
See the Junos OS Protected System Domain Configuration Guide
for information about accessing
the management module CLI.
The following topics describe how to make typical network connections
for a management module:
Connecting to the JCS1200 Management Module Using a Network
Ethernet Connection
To connect the management module to the network
using the Ethernet port:
- Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap
to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points
on the chassis.
- Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to
the Ethernet port on the management module. See Figure 1 for the location of input and output
connectors on the management module.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to
the network.
- Check the Ethernet LEDs to make sure that the network
connection is working.
- A lit green Ethernet LINK LED indicates that
there is an active connection through the port to the network.
- A flashing green Ethernet activity (TX/RX) LED
indicates that there is activity through the port over the network
link.
Connecting to the JCS1200 Management Module Using a Direct
Ethernet Connection
To connect the Ethernet cable directly to
the management module:
- Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap
to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points
on the chassis.
- Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to
the Ethernet port on the management module. See Figure 1 for the location of input and output
connectors on the management module.
- Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to
the Ethernet port on the client computer.
- Check the Ethernet LEDs to make sure that the network
connection is working.
- A lit green Ethernet LINK LED indicates that
there is an active connection through the port to the network.
- A flashing green Ethernet activity (TX/RX) LED
indicates that there is activity through the port over the network
link.
Connecting to the JCS1200 Management Module Using a Console
Serial Connection
To connect the management module to a console
using a serial cable:
- Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap
to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points
on the chassis.
- Plug one end of an RJ-45 serial cable into
the serial connector on the management module. See Figure 1 for the location of input and output
connectors on the management module.
- Connect the other end of the serial cable to your
console.
The serial cable must have the characteristics
shown in Serial Cable Characteristics for the JCS1200 Management Module.
Connecting to the JCS1200 Management Module Using a Direct
Serial Connection
To connect the management module to a client
computer using a serial cable:
- Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap
to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points
on the chassis.
- Plug one end of an RJ-45 serial cable into the serial
connector on the management module. See Figure 1 for the location of input and output connectors on the management
module.
- Connect the other end of the serial cable to the
serial connector of the client computer, such as a notebook computer.
- Configure the serial port of the client computer
to the following values:
- Baud rate—9600
- Parity—none
- Stop bits—1
