JCS1200 Routing Engine Description

Figure 1 shows a JCS1200 Routing Engine.

Engine

The JCS1200 platform provides 12 bays for Routing Engines. A Routing Engine is a hot-swappable independent server with its own processors, memory, storage, network controllers, operating system, and applications. The Routing Engine is installed in a bay in the JCS1200 platform and shares power, fans, switches, and ports with other Routing Engines.

Note: JCS1200 Routing Engines can be used only on the JCS1200 platform.

The Ethernet controllers on the Routing Engine communicate with the network through the Ethernet-compatible switch modules on the JCS1200 platform. Network signals to and from the Routing Engine are automatically routed to a same-network-interface switch module through circuitry in the JCS1200 platform.

Table 1 shows the Routing Engines supported on the JCS1200 platform.

Each Routing Engine consists of the following components:

  • Keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) select button—This button is not supported.
  • Media tray select button—Press this button to associate the shared media tray (removable media drives and front panel USB ports) with the Routing Engine. The LED on the button flashes while the request is being processed and then is lit when ownership of the media tray has been transferred to the Routing Engine. It can take approximately 20 seconds for the operating system in the Routing Engine to recognize the media tray.

If there is no response when you press the media tray select button, you can use the management module to determine whether local control has been enabled on the Routing Engine.

  • Power-control button—Press this button to power on or power off the Routing Engine.
  • LEDs—There are five LEDs that indicate the status of the Routing Engine. JCS1200 Routing Engine LEDs describes the functions of these LEDs.
