Juniper Networks Research
Concludes:
Consumers Favour Telecom Providers
and ISPs for IPTV Delivery
Consumers would choose traditional
telecom providers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) over
portal/content providers to supply their IPTV (Internet Protocol
Television) service, according to new European research commissioned
by Juniper Networks. The research suggests that consumers’ primary
concerns focus upon the quality, reliability and security of
broadband connections.
Juniper’s research also suggests that IPTV adoption
will be increasingly defined by consumer demands for highly
personalized services, enabling users to build their own schedules
and packages built around on-demand content. As a result, “traditional”
providers in the
U.K., France
and Germany
may have only a small window of opportunity to establish services
and secure IPTV subscribers before competition hots up.
The incumbent telecom operators were given particularly
strong support in Germany
and the U.K.
(62.5% and 48.5% as first choice provider respectively). This
is where the challenge to win IPTV customers will be most acute,
as German and British respondents also had the highest levels
of existing cable and satellite TV service subscribers. By comparison,
respondents in
France, which had the highest
level of existing IPTV users (3.5%), placed most trust in ISPs,
reflecting the more competitive telecoms market with numerous
ISPs successfully vying for broadband customers.
Survey respondents (3000 in total), all consumers in
the U.K.,
France and
Germany between 18 and 65+
years of age, opted for established telecoms brands over other
potential IPTV providers, because they perceive this will deliver
the best quality of service.

The Case for IPTV in the Multiplay Mix
The
market for video over broadband is now taking off with triple
digit growth rate. By the end of 2006, there was 2,5 million
paying IPTV subscribers in EMEA according to Canalys research.
To understand how service providers can benefit from this opportunity,
Juniper Networks recently gathered representatives from some
of the leading IPTV Service Providers and vendors in the IPTV
market space for a round table. What will provoke migration?
Is quality a bigger issue than initially anticipated and do
consumers care about security?
