Redefining Enterprise Security - Access Control
Information security has never been more complicated than it is today, nor has it ever been more critical. Security products often have been quite tactical in nature, solving specific problems very well, but missing the “big picture.” As a result, IT professionals are caught between a rock and a hard place—between an increasingly virtual business environment that requires specific solutions and escalating security problems that affect the entire enterprise.

These conflicting demands can’t be met with current security solutions, which were conceived to protect traditional LANs accessed by well-defined users sitting at fixed workstations. Industry experts have estimated that more than half of employees now work outside company headquarters, and a significant percentage are mobile. For instance the incident reported in the US in December that resulted in a hacker gaining access to a water supply company network. Malware inadvertently picked up during casual Web surfing or shopping, and then carried through the enterprise door upon the employee’s return to the office, can suddenly find itself on a 1000-Mbps connection, where it can spread like wildfire.

Access control was born out of an urgent need to a get a grip on both malicious and accidental or careless breaches and IT professionals are redefining enterprise security as access control, and turning it into one of the hottest new topics since SSL VPNs. Forrester Research reports that more than one-third of enterprises are actively deploying access control solutions, or will be by the end of the year, and Infonetics Research expects the market for such products to grow more than tenfold between 2005 and 2008.

Announcing Unified Access Control v2.0!
Juniper has delivered the promise that it made when it acquired Funk Software less than a year ago - to combine UAC 1.X capabilities which used Juniper's best-selling firewalls as enforcement points - with functionality from Funk's market-leading 802.1X components, including the OAC client-side supplicant and Steel-Belted Radius. The result is an access control solution that can work in a wide variety of deployment scenarios, including those with 802.1X wired or wireless infrastructure, those with Juniper firewalls, or those with both. You can decide what deployment works best, regardless of your switching infrastructure or whether you have Juniper firewalls or not. You can decide what additional security that you want to deploy using TNC-compliant solutions, and rest assured that UAC 2.0 will interoperate seamlessly.

Unified Access Control is:

  • Standards-based, non-proprietary solution
  • Adaptable - can change as the enterprise network changes
  • A way to avoid single vendor lock in
  • The most complete solution on the market, addressing the most relevant access control needs and user cases
