Title: NSTX Remote Denial Of Service Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
NSTX is a group of utilities that make it possible to create IP tunnels using DNS queries and replies; this allows for network communication where only DNS traffic is used.
It has been reported that NSTX is prone to a remote denial of service vulnerability. This issue is due to a failure of the application to handle network strings of excessive length.
This issue has been reported to present itself when 500 bytes of unstructured data are sent to the nsxtd process. Once the string is received, the process attempts to dereference a NULL data pointer, causing exception to be raised. It is not currently known why this occurs. It may be possible for attackers to execute arbitrary code, though this has not been confirmed.
This issue may allow a remote attacker to cause the affected process to crash, denying service to legitimate users.
