Title: Nival Interactive Etherlords Remote Denial Of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Etherlords and Etherlords II are role playing based adventure games commercially available for the Microsoft Windows platform. The game has the capacity to act as both a server and a client and supports multiplayer, network based gaming.

A remote denial of service vulnerability has been reported in Etherlords and Etherlords II. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly validate user-supplied network data.

The problem presents itself when a malicious packet is sent to the server that contains an excessively large value specifying the size of the data to follow. The client server interaction specifies that the third packet in the initialization sequence (signed as packet '3') contains a 16 bit value at an offset of 9 bytes into the packet specifying the size of the data block that will be sent.

If this 16 bit number is excessively large the process will attempt to copy data into unallocated memory, triggering an exception and causing the affected process to crash. It is unknown if this could be exploited beyond causing a denial of service condition.

This issue may be leveraged to deny service to legitimate users.
