Title: Microsoft Internet Explorer window.open Media Bar Cross-Zone Scripting Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Microsoft Internet Explorer can employ the 'window.open' method to open a new window and load a document specified by a URI. The '_media' parameter of this method is used to load a specified URI into the HTML content area of the Media Bar. The Media Bar is used to play media files in an Internet Explorer window. The Media Bar functionality is only available in Internet Explorer 6 and above.

It has been reported that Internet Explorer is prone to an issue that may allow hostile script code and Active Content to be executed in the context of the My Computer Zone or a foreign domain. This would occur when malicious web content is rendered in Internet Explorer. Reportedly, hostile code can be executed in the context of the My Computer Zone or a foreign domain via the '_media' property of the 'window.open' method by loading a JavaScript URI into the Media Bar.

Exploitation of this issue could allow various attacks, such as cookie-theft from an arbitrary domain. Other issues, such as additional issues described in BID 8577, may also facilitate execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable client system by causing malicious content to be stored on the victim system and then referenced.

** This issue was reported independently on Mar 01, 2004 but actually describes one of the vulnerabilities detailed in BID 8577 "Multiple Microsoft Internet Explorer Script Execution Vulnerabilities". This BID is being updated to include details from the original report.
