Title: LiveJournal HTML Injection Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

LiveJournal is freely available web based personal journal application distributed under the GNU Public License. It is implemented using Perl scripts and requires a MySQL database back end.

It has been reported that LiveJournal is prone to a HTML injection vulnerability. This issue arises due to insufficient sanitization of user provided input allowing injection of HTML and script code into site content.

The issue surrounds the user provided URL specifying the image to be displayed in the background of the personal journal. Although the application filters HTML tags, it fails to filter semicolons and parenthesis. This may allow a user to inject malicious script code, which would be rendered into the BODY tag of the vulnerable script.

This could permit an attacker to inject malicious script code that would be interpreted by the browser of a user visiting the attacker's page on a vulnerable site. This would occur in the security context of the site and may allow for theft of cookie-based authentication credentials or other attacks.

Affected Products:

  • LiveJournal LiveJournal
  • LiveJournal LiveJournal 1.1.0
