Title: XSOK LANG Environment Variable Local Buffer Overrun Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

xsok is a freely available, open source single player game. It is available for the Linux platform.

xsok is prone to a locally exploitable buffer overrun vulnerability.

The vulnerability exists in the 'loadsave.c' source file and is due to an unbounded sprintf() operation being performed with input supplied to the LANG environment variable. By setting a LANG environment variable of excessive length, it is possible to corrupt sensitive variables in memory. This could be exploited to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. The program is typically installed setgid games.

Affected Products:

  • xsok xsok 1.0.0 2
