Title: Microsoft Windows NT File Management Function Denial Of Service Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 is prone to a denial of service vulnerability in the GetCanonicalPath() function, contained in ntdll.dll. The issue is reported to be caused by insufficient internal input validation by the function, potentially resulting in freeing of invalid memory. Support for the function is not installed on Windows NT by default, but may pose remote attack vectors on systems that support the function and run applications that use the function without sufficient input validation of externally-supplied data.

Microsoft has stated that the vulnerable function may be commonly used in web server and application server implementations, though is not reportedly used in IIS. This vulnerability is reported to pose a risk only to those applications that use the function and may not be exploited to cause a denial of service to other components.

The vulnerability is related to memory management and may potentially be exploited to execute arbitrary code on the system, though this has not been confirmed.

**Update: Microsoft has released updated fixes to address this issue. The vendor has reported that the original security patch that was issued caused the RAS service to fail when the system was rebooted post patch application.
