Title: IBM U2 UniVerse UVADMSH Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

IBM UniVerse is a relational database designed for embedded applications.

Under certain configurations, UniVerse allows the 'uvadm' user to perform certain administration tasks for the software. It has been reported that the uvadmsh binary does not perform bounds checking when parsing command-line arguments. When supplying a path for the -uv.install option, it may be possible to supply a string of excessive length, which will be read by the uvadmsh application and may overrun the buffer allocated to store this data. It may be possible to corrupt stack variables, such as a saved instruction pointer, and cause execution of arbitrary code.

It should be noted that because access to the -uv.install option is restricted to the uvadm user, other users may not be able to successfully exploit this vulnerability.

While this vulnerability was reported in UniVerse version 10.0.0.9, previous versions are likely vulnerable as well.

This issue was described in BID 8200 and is now being assigned a separate BID.

Affected Products:

  • IBM UniVerse 10.0.0.0.9
