Title: Philboard philboard_admin.ASP Authentication Bypass Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

philboard is a web-based forum implemented using ASP script.

A vulnerability has been discovered in the 'philboard_admin.asp' script used by philboard. The problem occurs during authentication and may allow an attacker to gain unauthorized administrative access.

After legitimate authentication occurs, the 'philboard_admin.asp' script creates a cookie on the host's machine containing the 'philboard_admin=True' or 'admin=True' string. When the administrator authenticates again at a later time, the 'philboard_admin.asp' script attempts to identify the 'philboard_admin=True' or 'admin=True' string, before verifying the supplied password. If the string is found, the user will be successfully authenticated.

An attacker may be able to exploit this issue by constructing a malicious cookie containing the 'philboard_admin=True' or 'admin=True' string. When attempting to login to philboard as an administrator, the 'philboard_admin.asp' script will identify the string and authenticate the unauthorized user.

By gaining administrative access an attacker may be capable of carrying out a variety of attacks.

It should be noted that although this vulnerability has been reported to affect philboard version 1.14 previous versions might also be affected.

Affected Products:

  • Philboard philboard 1.14.0
