Title: SLMail POP3 Server Remote Buffer Overrun Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

SLMail is commercially available e-mail server for the Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is maintained and distributed by BVRP.

It has been reported that a boundary condition error exists in the SLMail POP3 server. A remote attacker sending a password of excessive length, during the authentication process, to the POP3 server may cause a buffer overrun that could result in execution of malicious instructions and system compromise.

The POP3 server does not sufficiently check bounds on input supplied via the POP3 'PASS' command to the server, which could be exploited to overwrite stack memory with attacker-supplied values. This could lead to execution of attacker-supplied instructions with the privileges of the POP3 Server process.

This vulnerability could result in a remote attacker gaining unauthorized access to a vulnerable host with the POP3 Server process privileges. Additionally, this may result in unauthorized administrative access.

Affected Products:

  • BVRP Software SLMail 5.1.0.0.4420
