Title: 3Com SuperStack 3 Firewall Content Filter Bypassing Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
A vulnerability has been reported in 3Com Superstack 3 Firewalls.
Under normal circumstances web request data is intercepted and the HTTP header is compared against an access control list. If a request is made to a domain that violates policy the data is not forwarded.
A problem in the way the affected firewall compares intercepted data may make it possible for an attacker to bypass HTTP content filtering. Specifically, 3Com Superstack 3 Firewalls fail to reassemble fragmented HTTP data. By making a request to an HTTP server, through the use of a protocol which fragments data, it may be possible to access restricted pages.
An attacker could exploit this issue by connecting to a server using an application, such as telnet, and creating their own HTTP header. Because information transferred via telnet is not buffered, the filter will not detect the HTTP header information.
Although unconfirmed, it is possible that this issue also affects other HTTP content filters.
