Title: Perl2Exe Code Obfuscation Weakness

Severity: LOW

Description:

Perl2Exe is a utility for packaging Perl scripts into self-contained executable files. It is available for Microsoft Windows and Linux/Unix platforms.

Perl2Exe supports an "encrypt" option that attempts to obfuscate Perl source code when converting it to an executable format. The obfuscation algorithm used (XOR source code bytes with those of a hardcoded key) is trivially reversible. Those who use Perl2Exe with the expectation that the source code will be concealed from the end user may have a false sense of security as a result.

It should be noted that Perl2Exe is not intended to be used in this manner and that it is simply a tool for generating a Perl executable that will run without an external interpreter.

Affected Products:

  • IndigoSTAR Software Perl2Exe 1.0.09
  • IndigoSTAR Software Perl2Exe 5.0.02
  • IndigoSTAR Software Perl2Exe 6.0.0
