Title: Netscape Email Client Message Deletion Weakness
Severity: LOW
Description:
The Netscape 7.0 suite includes an email client designed to handle POP3 and IMAP accounts. A weakness has been discovered in the Netscape 7.0 email client when deleting messages.
According to the Netscape Help documentation, email messages located in the 'Trash' folder will be deleted when a user selects the 'Empty Trash' option. This information is misleading and may lead to the disclosure of sensitive email messages believed to be deleted.
It has been discovered that messages marked for deletion by the 'Empty Trash' option will be deleted only when the folder is compacted. This may result in excessive messages believed to be deleted being located in the 'Trash' directory.
A malicious local user may take advantage of this weakness to obtain email messages believed to be deleted by the legitimate Netscape user.
Affected Products:
- Netscape Netscape 7.0.0
