Title: OpenBSD False syslogd Source IP Reporting Weakness
Severity: INFO
Description:
syslogd is used to log various system events. It is also possible to configure syslog to report to a central server.
A weakness in the remote reporting functionality of syslogd has been discovered.
It is possible for syslog to send false information to a remote syslogd server. This problem occurs when a host has its IP address reconfigured using the ifconfig() function and is not then rebooted. In this situation, any logs generated by syslog on the recently reconfigured host, will be sent to a remote syslog server with the previous IP address and not the currently configured IP address.
This may result in confusion when other services make use of the false syslog data. Systems, such as IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems), may use this false information to generate reports.
This weakness has been reported for syslogd on OpenBSD systems.
Affected Products:
- OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.9.0
- OpenBSD OpenBSD 3.0
- OpenBSD OpenBSD 3.1
- OpenBSD OpenBSD 3.2
