Title: MERCUR Mailserver Control-Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

MERCUR Mailserver is an e-mail server for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

MERCUR Mailserver is prone to a remotely exploitable buffer overflow condition. The condition is due to insufficient bounds checking in the Control-Service component, which listens on TCP port 32000 by default. It is possible to corrupt process memory by supplying an overly long username/password.
Attackers may exploit this condition to overwrite stack variables (including the return address) and execute arbitrary instructions with the privileges of the mailserver.

Since the server will typically run with SYSTEM privileges, exploitation of this vulnerability will result in a full compromise of the host.

Affected Products:

  • Atrium Software MERCUR Mailserver 3.3.0
  • Atrium Software MERCUR Mailserver 3.3.0 SP1
  • Atrium Software MERCUR Mailserver 3.3.0 SP2
  • Atrium Software MERCUR Mailserver 4.0.0 1
  • Atrium Software MERCUR Mailserver 4.0.0 1 SP1
  • Atrium Software MERCUR Mailserver 4.2.0
