Title: Microsoft IIS HTR ISAPI Extension Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
A buffer overflow in the HTR ISAPI extension has been reported for Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services).
HTR is a scripting technology for IIS that has been largely superseded by ASP (Active Server Pages). A condition exists in the HTR ISAPI extension that may enable a remote attacker to send a number of malformed requests which are capable of overwriting locations in memory with attacker-supplied data.
This condition affects IIS 4.0, IIS 5.0 and may be effectively mitigated by disabling the extension.
Exploitation of this vulnerability may result in a denial of service or allow for a remote attacker to execute arbitrary instructions on the victim host.
It is important to note that this BugTraq ID is an individual vulnerability entry to followup the aggregated Multiple Remote IIS Vulnerabilities alert released by SecurityFocus.
