Title: IRIX SNMP Daemon Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

SGI IRIX ships with an SNMP server that is enabled by default.

The IRIX SNMP daemon is vulnerable to a remotely exploitable buffer overflow condition. The condition can be triggered if remote attackers transmit a malformed SNMP request to a vulnerable server.

It is believed that the overflow occurs on the stack. Attackers may be able to construct a request that causes a function return address to be replaced with a pointer to supplied shellcode. When the affected function returns, the attacker's instructions will be executed. The SNMP service is initiated at system startup as the root user. Any instructions that are executed will run with these privileges. A successful attack will result in complete compromise of affected systems.

SNMPv1 authentication is based on communities. SNMP requests may be made if an appropriate community is supplied. A public read-only community present by default may allow for remote exploitation without any other authentication.

IRIX 6.5 is confirmed vulnerable. Earlier versions may also be affected.
