Title: VLC Media Player Bookmark Creation Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

VLC Media Player is a multimedia player available for Microsoft Windows.

VLC Media Player is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to perform adequate checks on user-supplied input. Specifically, this issue occurs when a user attempts to create a bookmark via the 'Playback' menu while an '.mp3' audio file containing crafted ID3 metadata tags is playing.

Attackers may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of the application. Failed attacks will cause denial-of-service conditions.

VLC Media Player 1.0.5 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.

Affected Products:

  • VideoLAN VLC media player 1.0.0
  • VideoLAN VLC media player 1.0.1
  • VideoLAN VLC media player 1.0.2
  • VideoLAN VLC media player 1.0.3
  • VideoLAN VLC media player 1.0.5
