Title: PHP 'htmlspecialcharacters()' Malformed Multibyte Character Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

PHP is a framework for developing web applications; it is available for multiple platforms.

PHP is prone to a cross-site scripting vulnerability because it fails to sufficiently sanitize user-supplied input. Specifically, the 'htmlspecialcharacters()' function fails to handle some malformed multibyte character sequences.

An attacker may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary script code in the browser of an unsuspecting user in the context of the affected site. This may let the attacker steal cookie-based authentication credentials and launch other attacks.

NOTE: In some configurations, attackers may exploit this issue to carry out HTML-injection attacks.

Versions prior to PHP 5.2.12 are vulnerable.
