Title: Centra CentraOne Encoded Credentials Log File Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

CentraOne is a commercially available education software package. It is maintained and distributed by Centra.

A vulnerability has been reported that makes it possible to gain access to sensitive user information. The issue is in the logging of user credentials.

When a user connects to the CentraOne server via the Internet, the server logs various information in the software logfile. This information usually includes information about the user's machine and the connected network such as the proxy server name, port, and exception list. The log file also includes the encoded username and password string.

The CenturaOne software stores the user and password credentials in the CentraOne log file, and does not set secure permissions on the log file. In addition to insecure log file permissions, the data is stored in the log file using an insecure encoding algorithm.

This makes it possible for a local user to gain access to the CentraOne infrastructure with the privileges of any user that has logged into the system and had an access entry placed in the log file.

It should be noted that this only affects systems which connect to the Centra Server through a proxy server which has Basic Authentication enabled.

Affected Products:

  • Centra ASP 0.0.0
  • Centra CentraOne 5.2.0
  • Centra Smart Connect 0.0.0CEN5.2-03
