Title: Platform LSF LSF_ENVDIR Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
LSF(Load Sharing Facility) is a series of tools for scheduling, monitoring and analyzing the workload of a network. It supports a number of Unix platforms and can also be used to manage workstations running the Microsoft Windows NT/2000 platforms.
A vulnerability exists in lsadmin and badmin which may allow a local attacker to gain root privileges on the host running a vulnerable version of LSF.
lsadmin and badmin do not implement sufficient bounds checking when they try to determine their environment directory. It is possible to cause a segmentation fault by setting a LSF_ENVDIR environment variable which is 292+ characters long.
As lsadmin and badmin are both setuid root, a local attacker may be able to manipulate this buffer overflow to overwrite stack variables(including the return address) in such a way as to execute attacker-supplied code, resulting in elevated privileges for the attacker.
A number of other buffer overflows reportedly exist in the lsadmin and badmin executables.
Affected Products:
- Platform LSF 4.0.0
- Platform LSF 4.2.0
