Title: CDE XTerm Elevated Privilege Acquisition Vulnerability

Description:

Common Desktop Environment (CDE) is a commercial window management system for X. It is distributed with various commercial UNIX implementations.

A problem in CDE makes it possible for local users to gain elevated privileges. The problem is in the saving of previous CDE sessions.

When a user accesses a system through CDE, the desktop functions as a standard X Window Management system. When the user exits a CDE session, the state of the desktop is saved. This includes any open CDE applications, such as graphical file managers, xterms, and the like. When a user logs into an X session again, the system restores the previously open applications to their previously placed positions on the desktop.

CDE does not check the validity of previously saved sessions. This vulnerability allows a local user to make modifications to the previously saved session, and when the desktop restarts, give the user an xterm with elevated privileges. This could allow a local user to gain elevated privileges, including administrative access.
