Title: EasyNews NewsDatabase/Template Modification Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

EasyNews is a free, open-source script for displaying news stories on a website.

EasyNews is prone to a vulnerability which may allow a remote attacker to modify information in its news database. As a result, a remote attacker may post unmoderated comments or possibly modify information in the templates used by EasyNews.

This may be exploited by manipulating the arguments for script variables in a web request.

When writing comment data to a save file on the filesystem, easyNews uses a variable ($cid) that can be externally supplied as part of the path. EasyNews does not filter '../' characters from this variable and it is thus possible for an attacker to create or overwrite any file with a '.dat' extension in a directory writeable by the webserver process.

Attackers may overwrite the primary News database, 'news.dat' by supplying the value '../news' for the 'cid' variable.

Earlier versions may also be vulnerable.

Affected Products:

  • easyScripts easyNews 1.5.0
