Title: KDE KSSL NULL Character CA SSL Certificate Validation Security Bypass Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
KDE is a graphical desktop environment for Linux and Unix computers.
The application is prone to a security-bypass vulnerability because it fails to properly validate the domain name in a signed CA certificate. Specifically, the application stops reading the domain name when it encounters a NULL character. However, an attacker can acquire a legitimate certificate for a subdomain that contains a NULL character. Such a subdomain may look like 'example.net\0example.com' where the attacker owns 'example.com' and wishes to impersonate 'example.net'.
Successfully exploiting this issue allows attackers to perform man-in-the-middle attacks or impersonate trusted servers, which will aid in further attacks.
KDE 3.5.4 is known to be vulnerable. Other versions may be affected as well.
NOTE: This issue may be related to the issue described in BID 35888 (Mozilla NSS NULL Character CA SSL Certificate Validation Security Bypass Vulnerability). We will update this BID when more information becomes available.
