Title: OpenBSD lpd Remote File Creation By Trusted Root User Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

lpd is a daemon used to receive print jobs through the network. It will accept requests from users and machines listed in either of two files, /etc/hosts.equiv or /etc/hosts.lpd.

A vulnerability exists in the OpenBSD implementation of lpd which allows remote users to create arbitrary new files in the root directory of the server. In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be listed in one of the host files as able to access lpd. Additionally, the attacker must access lpd as the root user.

Earlier versions of OpenBSD may also be vulnerable. By default, lpd is not enabled on OpenBSD.

Affected Products:

  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.8.0
  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.9.0
  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 3.0
