Title: OpenBSD User Mode Return Value Denial Of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

OpenBSD is a freely available implementation of the BSD Operating System. It is based on the NetBSD implementation.

A problem within the operating system could lead to a local user denying service to legitimate users. The problem is in the handling of values by the kernel.

Under some conditions, an application launched by a regular user on the system can cause a system crash. When an application on an OpenBSD system attempts to pipe a NULL value, a fault in the kernel causes the system to crash immediately. A power cycling of the system is required to resume normal operation.

This problem makes it possible for a local user to deny service to legitimate users of the system.

Affected Products:

  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.6.0
  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.7.0
  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.8.0
  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 2.9.0
  • OpenBSD OpenBSD 3.0
