Title: 'Compress::Raw::Bzip2' Perl Module Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Perl is a multiplatform programming language. The 'Compress::Raw::Bzip2' module provides a low-level interface to the 'bzip2' compression library.

'Compress::Raw::Bzip2' is prone to a remote code-execution vulnerability that is triggered when the module is used to process compressed data. Specifically, the issue affects the 'bzinflate()' function of the 'Bzip2.xs' file and stems from an off-by-one error that may result in a heap-overflow condition.

Successful exploits may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause denial-of-service conditions in applications that use the vulnerable module.

Versions prior to 'Compress::Raw::Bzip2' 2.019 are affected.

Affected Products:

  • Activestate ActivePerl 5.10.1
  • Compress::Raw::Bzip2 Compress::Raw::Bzip2 2.017
  • Gentoo Linux
  • MandrakeSoft Enterprise Server 5
  • MandrakeSoft Enterprise Server 5 x86_64
  • MandrakeSoft Linux Mandrake 2009.1
  • MandrakeSoft Linux Mandrake 2009.1 x86_64
