Title: Allaire JRun SSI Arbitrary File Source Disclosure Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Allaire JRun is a web application development suite with JSP and Java Servlets. JRun supports Server Side Includes (SSI), SSI allows a webmaster to include various variables in an otherwise static HTML file. Variables which might be included could be the current time on a website or last modified date and time etc. By default, file extension associated to the SSI handler is .shtml.
JRun contains a vulnerability that allows a user to access files within the webroot. Submitting a request for a non-existent .shtml file along with a specified Content-Length header and a #include of a known file residing on the host, JRun will reveal the contents of the known file. This is due to a flaw in a Server Side component which handles requests for SSI pages.
This vulnerability could enable an attacker to gain access to the source of JSP files because the includes on JSP pages are not processed by the JSP handlers. In addition, access controls implemented by the server will be bypassed. For example, the WEB-INF directory contains information on web application classes, pre-compiled JSP files, server side libraries, session information and files such as web.xml and webapp.properties, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to reveal the contents of any file residing in this or any other protected directory.
In addition to disclosing the contents of arbitrary files, this vulnerability could allow a user to invoke the execution of a java servlet, by including /servlet/servletname/ in an URL, on the web server. Servlets can be invoked despite disabling of the '/servlet/' mapping.
Successfully exploited, this vulnerability could enable an attacker to gain access to sensitive system information in various files residing on the target system, and potentially further compromise the vulnerable target system.
JRun access controls set on files will not prevent their disclosure.
