Title: PHP Nuke Weak Encryption In User Cookie Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

PHP-Nuke is a popular web based Portal system. It allows users to create accounts and contribute content to the site.

When a user authenticates to a PHP-Nuke based page, a cookie is created containing user information. This cookie is used as a persistant authentication mechanism across multiple page accesses.

This cookie contains, amount other items, a small amount of Base 64 encoded text. When decoded, this string will have the form "account:password:". This information can obviously be used to authenticate to the PHP-Nuke page, resulting in the user account being fully compromised.

An attacker could conceivably gain access to this cookie information by sniffing network traffic, if the page was not accessed through ssl. The attacker may also use any variety of cross-site scripting attacks to gain access to the contents of cookie-based authentication credentials.

Older versions of PHP-Nuke may also be vulnerable. PostNuke 0.6.4(and possibly earlier versions) is also vulnerable.

Affected Products:

  • Francisco Burzi PHP-Nuke 5.1.0
  • Francisco Burzi PHP-Nuke 5.2.0
  • Francisco Burzi PHP-Nuke 5.3.1
  • PostNuke Development Team PostNuke 0.64.0
