Title: Ruby on Rails 'http_authentication.rb' Nil Credentials Authentication Bypass Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Ruby on Rails is a web application framework for multiple platforms.
The application is prone to an authentication-bypass vulnerability because the framework fails to properly enforce access restrictions on certain requests to a site that requires authentication. Specifically, this issue occurs when applications restrict access via HTTP Basic or Digest authentication using the modules in the 'http_authentication.rb' source code file. If an attacker requests a page and provides empty strings when asked to authenticate, the affected code will return 'nil' instead of 'false', possibly allowing the attacker access to the specified page.
By gaining unauthorized access to protected resources, the attacker may be able to launch other attacks.
Ruby on Rails 2.3.2 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- Gentoo Linux
- Ruby on Rails Ruby on Rails 2.3.2
