Title: Microsoft Windows Terminal Services False IP Address Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Microsoft Windows Terminal Services centralizes management of user applications for each client connected to the server. User applications and desktops are transmitted over the network and displayed via terminal emulation program. Connections made to the Terminal Services host, are logged in the Terminal Services Manager console.
An issue exists in Terminal Services, which could allow a user to have a false IP addresss logged. When a client connects, the client host name and network address are transmitted as part of the Remote Desktop Protocol.
When Terminal Services logs the client connection, the address supplied by the client is logged instead of the address that could be obtained from the TCP/IP implementation. Since the client application provides this address, it is possible for a client to have any IP address logged instead of their real one.
An administrator can obtain the real network address of any client using other utilities, such as 'netstat'.
