Title: Cisco 12000 Series Internet Router Denial Of Service Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Cisco 12000 Series Internet Routers are engineered to handle high volume traffic. However, they are prone to a condition which may cause a denial of service.
Packets will be dropped if they are sent to a destination with an invalid path or if they are sent to the Null0 interface. When packets are dropped in this manner, an ICMP Unreachable reply will be sent back to the source of the dropped packet.
Generating a large number of ICMP Unreachable packets may cause a denial of service to the router by starving CPU resources.
Successful exploitation may degrade network resources or potentially cause the router to stop forwarding packets altogether.
This condition may occur when the router is "Black Hole" filtering.
It should be noted that this vulnerability only affects certain Cisco 12000 Series Internet Routers, and other Cisco router products should not be considered vulnerable.
Cisco classifies this issue under Vulnerability CSCdr46528, Vulnerability CSCds36541 and Vulnerability CSCdt66560.
Affected Products:
- Cisco IOS 12.0S
- Cisco IOS 12.0SC
