Title: RedHat Linux Korean Installation Insecure Default UMask Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

RedHat Linux is the UNIX clone operating system distributed by Red Hat, Incorporated. It is freely available, and open source.

A problem with the operating system has been discovered that under some circumstances could lead to local users gaining unauthorized privileges. The problem is in the implementation of umask with some installations.

The Korean install of RedHat Linux operates with a umask setting of 000. All files created under this installation/version are created with permissions of 777, making it possible for any user to read/write/execute a file belonging to any other user.

This could also result in a local user gaining elevated privileges, in the event of crontabs or other such infrastructure that could be executed by a root-owned process.

HP Secure OS software for Linux Release 1.0 is also affected by this issue, although a Korean version is not supported by Hewlett Packard, so there are no patches available.

Affected Products:

  • HP Secure OS software for Linux 1.0.0
  • RedHat Linux 7.1.0 k i386
