Title: Rational ClearCase DB Loader TERM Environment Variable Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

ClearCase is a commercially available software change management package. It is maintained and distributed by Rational.

A problem with the package could lead to a local user gaining elevated privileges. The problem is in the handling of environment variables by db_loader.

The db_loader program is a setuid root program, installed with a default installation of the software package. The program does not correctly handle input from the executing user's environment variables. When a user with a TERM environment variable of 550 bytes executes the db_loader program, a buffer overflow occurs. This results in the overwriting of stack variables, and can include the return address, which could in turn result in the execution of arbitrary attacker-supplied code.

Since the db_loader program is setuid root, this makes it possible for a local user to execute code with root privileges, and potentially gain administrative access.

Affected Products:

  • Rational Software ClearCase 3.2.0
  • Rational Software ClearCase 4.0.0
  • Rational Software ClearCase 4.1.0
  • Rational Software ClearCase 4.2.0
