Title: Solaris PT_CHMOD Arbitrary Terminal Writing Vulnerability

Severity: LOW

Description:

Solaris is a freely available implementation of the Unix Operating System. It is maintained and distributed by Sun Microsystems.

A problem has been discovered that may allow local users to write data to restricted terminals. The problem is in the handling of the access control entries by the terminals.

Upon logging into a system, a user is assigned a terminal. While the user is in possession of the terminal, the user may set an access control entry on the terminal. Upon exiting the session, the terminal is returned to the pool, and will be allocated to another user when it's needed again.

Upon being returned to the pool, the access control entry is not cleared on the terminal. When it is allocated to the next user, the previous owner of the terminal may still write to the terminal.

Affected Products:

  • Sun Solaris 8
  • Sun Solaris 8_x86
