Title: ToolTalk Library Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

ToolTalk is part of the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) package distributed with various commercial implementations of the Unix Operating System.

A problem has been found that could allow local users unauthorized access to system resources. The problem is in the implementation of the ToolTalk.

A library in the ToolTalk suite has been found to not perform adequate bounds checking. A program linked against this library could be vulnerable to attack, allowing a buffer overflow and the execution of code.

Since numerous setuid executables included with the CDE suite are linked against the ToolTalk libtt.so.1 library, this makes it possible for a local user to execute code, and potentially gain elevated privileges.

Affected Products:

  • Caldera OpenUnix 8.0.0
  • Caldera UnixWare 0.0.07
