Title: HP Data Protector Express 'dpwinsup.dll' Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

HP Data Protector Express is a backup and recovery solution.

HP Data Protector Express is prone to a privilege-escalation vulnerability.

This issue affects the 'dpwinsup.dll' module used by the 'dpwingad' process and is triggered when the affected server receives a malformed packet on TCP port 3817. Attackers can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with escalated privileges or cause denial-of-service conditions. Successful exploits may result in the complete compromise of affected computers.

UPDATE (June 23, 2009): This issue was originally reported as a local vulnerability. Additional reports indicate that remote attacks are possible.

HP Data Protector Express and SSE 4.x prior to build 46537
