Title: CDE DTPrintInfo Session Option Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

dtprintinfo is part of the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) package. dtprintinfo launches the CDE Print Manager window.

A problem with the program could make it possible for local users to gain elevated privileges. A local user exploiting this vulnerability could compromise the integrity of a vulnerable host. The problem is in the handling of the session option of dtprintinfo.

When executed, dtprintinfo accepts a filename through the -session argument. However, if this variable exceeds a certain (unknown) length, it can result in a buffer overflow. This could, in turn, result in the overwriting of stack variables, including the return address, and the execution of arbitrary code. Since the dtprintinfo program is typically installed with SetUID root privileges, any code would be executed as root.

This makes it possible for a local user to gain administrative privileges, and potentially compromise the integrity of an exploited system.
