Title: RedHat RPM Corrupt Query Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
RedHat Package Management (RPM) is a system used to package, distribute and install software. A vulnerability exists in version 4.0.2-7x which causes arbitrary code to execute when a maliciously constructed package is queried.
It is possible to modify the header of an RPM file such that it is still valid, but when queried will corrupt the heap. This can lead to the execution of arbitrary code. Exploitation of this bug is dependent on knowing what portion of the heap will be corrupted, which is dependent on initial conditions.
This also affects programs using the rpm-4.0.x libraries, including rpm2html. Under RedHat 7.0, viewing an RPM file with 'less' may cause the RPM file to be queried. This is the case under default settings.
The RedHat print system will attempt to process an RPM file with the 'RPM to ASCII' filter prior to printing it. As part of this process, the RPM file is queried. This may open a remote exploit.
It is possible that earlier 4.0.x packages are vulnerable.
Although RPM 3.0.x has been found not vulnerable, it is possible a similar problem exists for this version.
Affected Products:
- Conectiva Linux 7.0.0
- RedHat Linux 7.1.0
- RedHat Linux 7.2.0
- RedHat RPM 4.0.2 -7x
