Title: Novell Groupwise Arbitrary File Retrieval Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Novell GroupWise is a messaging system used across intranet and internet environments. GroupWise has various features including scheduling, calendaring, email, document management etc. This vulnerability affects the WebAccess component of GroupWise.

Normally the WebAccess servlet uses templates located in the / directory. It will, however, follow directory path traversal.

Remote users can learn the full path of the server install by passing an invalid argument to the User.html variable such as:

/servlet/webacc?User.html=nonexistant

Arbitrary files may be read through the webacc servlet by passing the appropriate file name as the User.html variable in the webacc servlet, and appending a null character to the string:

/servlet/webacc?User.html=../../../../../../../../boot.ini%00

This could be used to view the GroupWise configuration files, which may contain sensitive data.

Affected Products:

  • Novell Groupwise 5.5.0
  • Novell Groupwise 6.0.0
  • Novell Groupwise Enhancement Pack 5.5.0
