Title: Progress Database Malicious ProTermCap File Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Progress is a database software implementation distributed by Progress Software.
A problem with the software could make it possible for a local user to execute arbitrary code. This could present problems in setuid installations. The problem is due to the handling of long entries in the protermcap file.
It is possible for a user to place their own content in a termcap file to be loaded by Progress. Upon creating a maliciously crafted termcap file of 9000 bytes of data, the file could be referenced in the PROTERMCAP or PROMSGS environment variable.
Upon execution of the Progress program, a buffer overflow would occur. The overflow would result in the in the overwriting of stack variables, including the return address, and potentially the execution of arbitrary code. If the Progress binaries were installed setuid, this could lead to the execution of arbitrary code with elevated privilege.
Affected Products:
- Progress Database 8.3.0 D
- Progress Database 9.1.0 B
- Progress Database 9.1.0 C
