Title: AOL Instant Messenger Large BuddyIcon Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is a real time messaging service for on line users. AIM uses a feature called BuddyIcons, which determines a users on line status using images.

A vulnerability exists in AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) which could cause the AIM client to stop responding.

AIM does not properly check the size of a user's BuddyIcon when sending instant messages. Therefore, a user with an unusually large BuddyIcon image display dimensions sending instant messages, could cause the target clients to stop responding.

A restart of the application may be necessary in order to regain normal functionality.

This issue may be the result of an unchecked buffer. If this is the case, there is a possibility that arbitrary code may be executed on the vulnerable target. However, this has not yet been confirmed.

Affected Products:

  • AOL Instant Messenger 4.7.0
