Title: Microsoft Windows 2000 RunAs Service Denial of Services Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
The Windows 2000 RunAs service allows an application or service to be executed as a different user. It can be accessed by holding down the shift key and right mouse clicking on an icon, then selecting 'Run as...' from the context menu. It is generally used by administrators to run applications with administrative permissions while logged in as an ordinary user.
When the RunAs service is invoked, it creates a named pipe session with the specified server for authentication of the supplied credentials. Only one instance of this pipe is allowed at one time. If a client were to create this named pipe session on the server without requesting any service, other clients would be unable to connect to this service until the connection is terminated.
Affected Products:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP1
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP2
